The House In The Cerulean Sea
Author: TJ Klune
Rating: 5/5
Recommend: A truly heartwarming novel, if I've ever read one. There is magic and children and an island by the sea... what's not to love?
The House In The Cerulean Sea tells the story of Linus Baker - an ordinary government official tasked with an extraordinary job. Mr Baker is a Caseworker for the Department In Charge Of Magical Youth; in other words it's his job to make sure that all of the magical children in the human community are being properly taken care of in their orphanages.
On an exceptionally dull Wednesday when Mr. Baker is suddenly charged with a Priority Level 4 assignment - going to an island for a month and sending reports about the welfare of the 6 children there - little does he know that his life is about to be changed completely forever. And this is where our delightful story begins...
I never fail to marvel at the power of authors - how their words and imagination can influence your feelings so that you go from feeling disappointed in a character to rooting for them within the span of a chapter. TJ Klune has obviously mastered this art, because his gorgeous novel with the wonderful name kept me enchanted till the very end.
Who doesn't love the beach? |
I loved the descriptions. The novel is set in a breathtaking summer island, where the ocean and the sky are the clearest cerulean blue. TJ Klune describes warm, sandy beaches, luscious forests and gardens, and simply a place that you will just want to dive into - the scenery is truly spectacular.
Next are the characters themselves. The personality of every single character was clearly built with a lot of care in mind; the children on the island - a gnome, a wyvern, a sprite, a were-Pomeranian, an unidentifiable green creature, and a infamous 6-year-old Antichrist - each have heartbreaking backstories. My favorite character however, has to be Linus himself: at the beginning of this novel, I was extremely agitated at the man but, by the end I wanted to hug him.
From the bottom of my heart, I recommend buying a copy of this book - it is both an incredibly attractive addition to the shelf, and a heartwarming story that is well-worth the read.
OMG where did you get that model of the orphanage ?
